THIS IS HOW IT ALL BEGAN

The very first Seasalt garment was the Sailor Shirt - a classic Breton striped top in beautifully soft organic cotton jersey. It’s been a favourite ever since.

Seasalt Breton Stripes

ICONS OF BRETON

Say "merci" to the French navy for the original Breton stripe. It was introduced as uniform in 1858 and these very first Breton tops were knitted, with 21 stripes to mark the number of Napoleon's victories.

Coco Chanel wearing breton stripes

COCO CHANEL

Fishermen, sailors and seafarers have been wearing them ever since, but it was Coco Chanel who first presented it as a fashion item in her 1917 collection - 100 years ago.

As one of the most influential and famous designers of her time, Chanel took elements if menswear and traditional workwear and adapted them into pratical yet stylish womenswear. She once said "Luxury must be comfortable, otherwise it is not luxury" - a sentiment shared by the Seasalt team today.

Creatives have since adopted the Breton stripe as their own, with artists and cultural icons such as Audrey Hepburn, Brigette Bardot and Picasso all well known for wearing Breton stripes
