saying goodbye to summer

Burning Man

The burning of effigies goes back to the Celts and Druids and did have a more gruesome reputation as we all know from that classic British horror movie, The Wicker Man. celebrating the golowan festival!

posted on July 1st, 2013 by Emma Raczkowski

Attracting tens of thousands of visitors every year, the Golowan Festival is an annual highlight for the people of Penzance. Meaning the Feast of St Johns this midsummer date has been celebrated since pre-Christian times with  torches, blazing barrels and burning bonfires. But concern about damage to property soon saw laws introduced to limit the locals fun and the festival died out.  But in 1990 the Golowan Festival was reborn and soon the traditional ingredients of the original event were revived including the Serpent Dance, Mock Mayor elections and fireworks.

All traffic is banned from the streets and crowds of people congregate to watch series of colourful processions move though the town. With the rain holding off and the sunshine out, the crowds this year were out in full force and our Penzance store had the fun of watching the people flock past and managed to catch a few snaps!

Where you at the Golowan festival? Do you have any interesting stories about the festival, if so we would love to hear them!
