We support The Fisherman’s Mission!

posted on February 17th, 2014 by Emma Raczkowski

Fish Friday

The Fishermen’s Mission is the only fishermen’s charity that provides emergency support alongside practical, financial, spiritual and emotional care to Fishermen & their families.

Here at Seasalt, we are committed to supporting local charities that contribute to the life and wellbeing of the community in and around Cornwall. Throughout 2013 we thought of lots of ways to raise funds for our friends, The Fisherman’s Mission, and raised over £6000. An exclusive edition of our popular Breton stripe Sailor Shirt in the softest organic cotton was sold in our shops and online, and we happily donated £5 from every charity Sailor Shirt sold direct to the Fisherman’s Mission.

We also held our popular annual Christmas Card Competition selling coastal-themed Christmas cards designed by you, our very creative customers. Members of the Seasalt team also took part in the Fishermen’s Mission’s annual fundraising day, Fish Friday, creating fantastic cakes in nothing other than fish themed shapes – our very own fish-cakes! Some of the more adventurous members of the Seasalt team also completed a 13-mile Midnight Madness walk across Dartmoor.

Midnights Mission on Dartmoor

Seasalt’s Joint Managing Director, Neil Chadwick, said, “We have a close affinity with the Fishermen’s Mission with many of our shops in towns with strong fishing communities and traditions. We’re really pleased to have raised this much money and we’re looking forward to seeing how much more we can help.”

Look out for this year’s special edition Sailor Tee, again raising money for the Fishermen’s Mission, due to go on sale in early March!

It’s safe to say that the weather in Cornwall this week has been eventful – torrential downpours, wailing winds and scary seas battering the Cornish coast.

Living as we do in one of the wettest parts of the UK, we’ve learnt to embrace the elements and have designed an entire collection of rain coats, boots and accessories to keep you warm, dry and looking good, whatever the forecast. And we hope that putting it on is a bit of a silver lining on an otherwise wet and wild day.

Here we go a-wassaling!

Here in Cornwall we welcome in the New Year with a wassail to the cider crops:a tradition involving singing, drinking, toast and perhaps even a few gunshots! Each and every wassail is unique to the town or village where it originates. The  tradition of the wassail is centuries old, and is historically a ceremony that involves singing and drinking in the health of trees to awaken the cider apple trees and scare away evil spirits to ensure a profitable and healthy harvest in the coming Autumn. It is still enjoyed today in parts of Cornwall, Devon, Somerset and the South West of England.

As we heave a sigh with a heavy heart at the passing of our dear friend summer, worry not, autumn is starting to arrive and with it comes all sorts of seasonal treats. The change in the weather means the start of lots of good things, wrapping up in new knits, pulling on our boots and getting out on the cliffs to test our new rain coats.

So to celebrate the change in season here’s our guide to a few choice coastal walks in the south west, if you think we’ve missed a beauty leave a comment below and tell us about your suggestion.

On Saturday night four Seasalters ditched an evening of barbecues and chilled wine in favour of a 13 mile hike over Dartmoor in the dark. Madness you might think and you’d be right – Midnight Madness in fact, in aid of our nominated charity Fishermen’s Mission.
