Our designers wrap up for a walk around the harbour town at the heart of our new collection
The wild natural landscape and rich culture of our home inspire everything we do here at Seasalt. This month, our designs draw on the creative and maritime heritage of Newlyn, a historic harbour town that sits just beyond Penzance on the south west coast of Cornwall.
Newlyn was the centre of the Arts & Crafts movement in Cornwall, known for its tradition of copper craft. The town is still a hub of artistic talent and is home to one of the UK’s largest fishing fleets. This lasting way of life, where artists and fishermen work side by side, has shaped the town’s history and unique character.
We visited the Newlyn Art Gallery, which was set up to showcase the work of the neighbouring art school. Today, it attracts visitors from around the world, exhibiting Cornish contemporary artists alongside international talent.
In The Strand, we discovered copper antiques and then stopped to take in the weather-worn harbour, dotted with colourful fishing boats.
Just back from the harbour, you’ll find a cluster of independent shops, including The Little Greengrocers and Newlyn Cheese & Charcuterie. Made for slow food shopping, the shelves are stacked with fresh produce, colourful jars and bottles.
As the weather cools and the flow of visitors ebbs, it’s a perfect time to visit this historic town. Wrap up in a soft wool jumper to walk the harbour wall and be refreshed by the cool sea air.
