The Story of a Seasalt Print

Sophie and her textile design team delight us every month with an array of beautiful new prints inspired by Cornwall. Seasalt prints have a wonderful handcrafted look and each one is unique to us, you won’t find them anywhere else. But have you ever wondered how our prints go from a spark of inspiration to the finished garment hanging in your wardrobe? We caught up with Sophie to find out just what it takes to make a unique Seasalt print.

Living in Cornwall, we’re inspired every day. The flora and fauna found all around Cornwall provides a constant source of inspiration – you’ll often find pretty foliage, anemones, leaves and seed heads within our prints. With our design studio overlooking Falmouth Bay, we also find ourselves constantly sketching the sailing boats. And the Falmouth Working Boats racing, with their distinctive, brightly coloured topsails, are a wonderful sight.

Our prints start life as sketchbook scribbles, before being developed using a wide range of different techniques from watercolours to potato printing! When Sophie and Kathryn are happy with their designs, the prints are scanned into the computer where they can be worked on to scale the prints, create the repeating pattern you see on your favourite Seasalt styles, and play with the colours until they have a print that works well for the garment and can easily be outfitted with the rest of the styles in the planned collection.
