We discovered they’re a year 10 Young Enterprise group from Truro School, who are striving to turn materials usually thrown away into something useful that will benefit the environment.
As you can imagine, here in Cornwall we have an abundance of seaweed; the group have cleverly created a Cornish seaweed based plant food!
Since October, they’ve been foraging for seaweed on Cornish beaches and drying it out on the washing line – much to their parents’ dismay! The seaweed is then blended with recycled materials such as coffee grounds, vegetable peelings and eggshells, then lovingly packaged and sold online. This nutritious mix has been proven to accelerate the health and growth of plants and the best news is it helps people who don’t have the time to regularly tend to their plants (great news!).
The entrepreneurs, who are only 14 and 15 years old, have also created pollinating cups to helps conserve the bee population.
Not so surprisingly, they were awarded ‘Company of the Year’ award at the Young Enterprise South West Regional Finals and have gone through to the next stage of the Young Enterprise competition to represent the South West in the National Finals in London on 7th July – good look girls!
