Summer is here, and where better to spend long, hot days than the beaches and coastlines of Cornwall.
Vanessa Bell’s famous painting, Summer Camp, inspired the mood for our June collection. Think warm days spent on the Cornish Riviera, relaxing on sun-bleached deckchairs, punctuated by dips in the sparkling water to cool off.
We’ve focused on the simple pleasures of spending time outdoors: days at the beach, eating outdoors with friends and watching the sky change colour as the sun slips below the horizon. Our in house designers found inspiration in 1930s posters and graphics, building the feel of a classic summer’s day in Cornwall.
Abstract Waves and Bold Florals
Sophie and the textile design team have created prints featuring swimming hat florals and windbreak-inspired stripes, for a playful vintage feel.
The joyous colours of overlapping windbreaks and 1920s designs by textile artist Sonia Delaunay inspired Sophie to create a fun, geometric design that brings together abstract stripes in hot summer colours. She used a tjanting and hot wax to draw the design, which gives it an authentic, hand rendered feel.
For floral fanatics, our Swim Hat Floral print takes inspiration from vintage swimming hats decorated with elaborate 3D flowers. We love a summer bloom – the bigger the better! See how costume designer, Fiona Chivers, recreates these beautifully retro swimming hats here.
I imagined the harbour years ago, with traditional fishing boats coming in under sail.
You can wear a piece of Cornwall wherever your summer takes you with new prints based on our favourite coastal sights, exclusively illustrated by Seasalt Artist, Matt Johnson. Our Scenic View Dress was inspired by a drawing trip to Sennen Cove, and captures a landscape of zingy yarrow flowers, a fisherman returning home and a lone gannet circling above.
Port Isaac features on the skirt, and if you visit the tiny fishing village this summer you’ll find a scene not too dissimilar.
Sun, Sea & Breton Stripes
Our famously soft, yarn-dyed stripes and checks are back in new styles and colours. Perfect for throwing on over a swimsuit, or for making a statement by pairing with a vintage inspired print.
Keeping Cool at Jubilee Pool
We shot this month’s collection on location at Jubilee Pool in Penzance, and we’ve echoed the sleek Art Deco style of the lido in our window designs.
Kathryn and the team loved the colours and shapes and have replicated them in large cardboard waves, in beautiful shades of blue. Layered up in the windows, our mannequins stand tall in the sea of stripy waves.
Jubilee Pool reopens for summer on the 6th of July, and we can’t wait to take a dip!
