Poppy Thaxter, Sophie Chadwick and Megan Jones with their scarfs

A few months ago Sophie joined the judging panel for a scarf competition set by Falmouth University for their textile design students. Their brief was to design a square, silk scarf inspired either by the landscape of West Cornwall or the artists who had worked at Porthmeor Studios in St Ives.

Megan and Poppy’s designs really captured the feeling and essence of St Ives and the artists who had worked at Porthmeor Studios.

The winning designers, Megan Jones (22) and Poppy Thaxter (21), produced beautiful designs inspired by the works of Terry Frost and Partrick Heron. Chris Hibbert, manager of the studios, said, “All the designs submitted were strong. The judges felt that Megan and Poppy’s designs really captured the feeling and essence of St Ives and the artists who had worked at Porthmeor Studios.”

Sophie loved being part of the judging panel. “This was a great opportunity to showcase young design talent in this area. I was extremely impressed with the standard of all the entries, and it has been a real pleasure to be part of the project.”

Megan and Poppy visited the design studios to meet with Sophie and to get a feel of what life is like working in a design environment. We loved meeting Megan and Poppy again, and couldn’t resist getting them in the studio and snapping a photo of their incredible designs. Even Pepé wanted to be involved!

Megan and Poppy’s Abstract St Ives and A St Ives Stroll scarves will be on sale at the Porthmeor Studios, with the proceeds going towards the Porthmeor Artist Residency Scheme, a project supporting the next generation of St Ives artists.
