Falmouth International Sea Shanty Festival 2017

With most of our shops in coastal towns and our designs inspired by Cornwall, maritime heritage is a really big part of what makes Seasalt unique.

To bring together Cornwall’s heritage and our love of singing, we’re proud sponsors of the Falmouth International Sea Shanty Festival (Friday 16th – Sunday 18th June).

The Shanty Festival celebrates the tradition of the humble shanty song. These traditional work songs were sung to motivate the crew of trading vessels and Clipper ships, many of which would have docked here in Falmouth. The songs helped with morale, and the rhythm helped sailors haul the ropes in time. It’s rumoured that if a sailor wanted to voice a complaint about their officers, they would do so in the guise of a shanty so they would avoid punishment! Sea shanties are a strong part of our maritime heritage and still very much thriving today.

Over the weekend the town will be filled with music and singing and will be infused with great community spirit. Bands from all around Europe will be taking to stages throughout the town (full schedule can be found here), you’ll even find performers outside our shop.

Here’s our lineup:

As well as keeping this music tradition alive, the Sea Shanty Festival also helps to raise money for the RNLI. This year’s festival coincides with Falmouth RNLI’s Lifeboat Day which will be a fantastic celebration the station’s 150th anniversary! From lifeboat demonstrations to a helicopter fly over, see what else they’ve got planned on their website.

The 2016 festival was the best to date. The performance schedule saw 59 groups descend over 23 venues and we saw our biggest crowds yet, with an estimated 40,000 visitors. We’re hoping this year will be even bigger and better!

Will you be at this year’s festival? Share your photos and videos with us on Faceboook, Twitter and Instagram and use the hashtag #FalSeaShanty, we’d love to see you enjoying the shanties.
