The Story of our Seasalt Sailor

The stripes that launched a thousand shirts

The very first garment we ever made was our Sailor Shirt and it’s still a year-round bestseller our customers love.

Inspired by classic Breton jerseys and cut for a relaxed fit, we make our Sailors from the finest quality Soil Association organic cotton, in a rainbow of Cornish colours, stripe settings and silhouettes.

Here’s what makes them so special…

Organic Cotton Comfort

Almost all our Sailor Shirts are made from 100% organic cotton, certified by the Soil Association. As well as being super-soft, beautiful quality and naturally breathable, using organic cotton means less impact on the environment and the workers that grow and process the cotton.

“I ordered two of these and absolutely love them. The quality of the fabric is exceptional and the fit is perfect.” Poppy, May 2019

Cornish or Breton

From timeless Breton to clean, evenly spaced Cornish stripes, there’s more than one way to wear a Sailor.

Our Breton stripes have seafaring roots. The style was once worn by the French navy, then adopted by artists and style setters, from Pablo Picasso to Coco Channel. And to quote the legendary designer, “fashion changes but style endures”.

Our Cornish Stripes are inspired by the bands of slip and clay on Cornishware pottery, which were said to reflect Cornwall’s blue skies and white-crested waves.

Meet the Sailor Family

As well as our original Sailor Shirt, we now have a Sailor Top (with 3/4 sleeves) and Sailor T-shirt based on our classic boat necked style.

“I have several of these tops; some short sleeved, some three quarters and some long sleeved and they all keep their colour, wash well and retain their shape.” Nancy

This year, we’ve added a Laid Back Sailor Shirt too, with a looser fit and dropped shoulders for a more relaxed look. Plus, later this season, we’ll be welcoming back our Sailor Vest, Dress and Skirt. So you can wear stripes every day of summer.

Not wanting to leave anybody out, we’ve made long and short sleeved Sailor Shirts for men too.

Cornish Colours You’ll Want to Collect

When it comes to stripes we don’t think you can ever have too much of a good thing. That’s why each month we add new colours to our collection, inspired by Cornwall and designed to coordinate perfectly with the rest of our womenswear. So they can be layered and mixed and matched with almost anything in the collection. Our stripes are always yarn-dyed for colour and clarity that won’t fade.

Make Them Your Own

Keep it simple
Tuck a classic Breton T-shirt into some flattering tapered trousers. It worked for Coco Chanel and it works for us.

Clash with confidence
For an eclectic feminine feel, pair stripes with floral prints. This is easiest to pull off if you keep your palette to a few clean colours and accessories to a minimum.

Layer your look
We layer our Sailors with everything – under soft denim pinafores, jumpsuits, and dungarees. In colder months, a flash of stripes adds an interesting pop of print under knitwear.

Stripes in the sunshine
Swap your usual beach cover up for a striped top in breathable organic cotton. Laidback, modern and ideal for walks along the shoreline.

We’d love to see how you style your stripes. You can show us using #WearingSeasalt
