40 Years of Seasalt

Sharing our love of Cornwall

This year marks our 40th birthday. For us, this milestone is both an opportunity to celebrate our story and look to the future. Our goals have always been simple: to craft beautiful clothing, share our love of Cornwall and make the best choices for our people and the planet.

We’re marking the occasion all year long by doing just that and more. Keep a look out for virtual events hosted by our talented staff and Seasalt friends, and features picking out just some of the people who make Seasalt what it is.

Thank you for being part of our journey. We hope you will join the celebrations.

The yellow raincoat that the Chadwick family bought from General Clothing Stores back in 1981. It’s been a source of inspiration for Seasalt’s beautiful and practical clothing.

WHERE IT ALL BEGAN

40 years of Seasalt means it’s 40 years since the Chadwick family popped into a little shop in Penzance for a raincoat and walked away with the keys.

The shop sold traditional workwear, like fishermen’s smocks, Guernsey pullovers and stripy tops, and within a few months they had moved down from the Midlands and were living in St Ives.

Our customers were the sailors, farmers and fishermen of the area, and quite a few of the St Ives artists came in as well. Those early days have shaped how our clothes look today.

The three Chadwick brothers had worked in the family shop all their lives, on and off. When their dad, Don, passed away in 2001, the brothers decided to create a brand inspired by all the things they love about Cornwall…and Seasalt was born!

Sophie met Neil three years later. A print designer, she helped shape early collections and still handcrafts many of our seasonal prints.

40 FACES OF SEASALT

Our story is woven with Cornwall, sewn together by many hands: designers and dreamers, pragmatic planners, and our stylish customers. Over the course of the year, we want to create a patchwork of portraits celebrating some of the people who have helped shape the last four decades. We’ll be letting you know how you can nominate yourself or others to be one of our ’40 Faces of Seasalt’, too.

Meet the first five people in our 40 Faces series, to find out a little bit about where we began and what inspires us.
