Families 1

Sara and Steph were the latest of the Seasalt team to take to our photo studio with their families to put our SS16 collection to the test. We went behind the scenes on the shoot to find out all about them…

How would you describe your mum’s style?

Mum’s styling is quite dressy I would say. She lives in a semi-permanent state of ‘smart-casual’ and never looks scruffy. Mum loves things that co-ordinate well. I have never known anyone to have as many scarves as my mum – she uses them to mix and match with different outfits.

We tend to have strong feelings about clothes. If we shop together, we may find something that we both love, or we may find something that one loves and the other hates. There are rarely half-measures when it comes to our tastes in clothes and shoes.

What do you admire about your mum?

My mum is modest in personality, has the most caring heart and she is blessed with a sense of humour that provides the loudest laugh going!

My mum worked very hard to bring my brother and I up, and I will always be immensely thankful for all she has done and continues to do to protect and look after us.

What do you think you’ve inherited from your mum?

We both sing, so I must have inherited that! Aside from the singing, we have very similar mannerisms and are both pedantic about proper grammar and spelling. I can blame my mum for all of these things!

Tell us about your mum’s talents…

My mum makes seriously good heavy cake (a traditional Cornish cake), lemon drizzle and saffron buns. She is always busy so she is a talented multi-tasker. Mum also has a gorgeous singing voice and a serious gift for holding a tricky harmony line.

Tell us about your fondest memory together…

Not one particular time sticks in my mind because we spend a lot of time together, but I love shopping and doing girly things with Mum.

One of the nicest things she ever did for me was surprising me on my 21st birthday by driving herself and one of my best friends up to my university in Winchester, I had no idea they were coming!

What did you enjoy about the shoot?

It was great to be pampered and I enjoyed the opportunity to try out new Seasalt styles. It was fun picking out the outfits that we used on the shoot.

What was the best thing about the outfits you were wearing?

I think the whole outfit Mum is wearing suits her down to a tee. It’s something she would definitely wear.

I loved the shorts I got to wear. They had a little stretch in them which made them really comfortable. I love turquoise and pinks together so I’m sure I’ll be getting a pair of those.

How would you describe your daughter’s style?

Steph’s quite individual in her style and manages to carry off pulling different styles together to create her own, making her unique.

What do you admire about your daughter?

I admire her loyalty to her friends and family and she’s provided me with strength and support when I’ve needed it most.  I think there’s a bit of role reversal going on there.

Do you think your daughter inherited any of your traits?

Steph has a great sense of humour and we do tend to find fun in the same things.  Unfortunately for her though, she’s also inherited my emotions which can be embarrassing at times.  The tears can flow (whether happy or sad) at the most inopportune times.  Reaching into the handbag for tissues usually happens at the same time!

Tell us about your daughter’s talents…

We come from a musical family and Steph makes me very proud when I hear her sing on stage. …. bursting with pride springs to mind!

Tell us about your fondest memory together…

There are so many, as we do tend to spend a lot of time together going to see live theatre and musicals. This year has been full of fond memories, including a surprises party that she organised for me for a recent “big” birthday. There were surprise visits from close friends and cocktails. She really pushed the boat out, having decorated my house with birthday confetti, balloons, twinkly lights which really set the mood.

What did you enjoy about the shoot?

The shoot was really relaxed.  I loved having my make-up done and it’s always good to spend mum and daughter time together, chuckling about the same things.

What was the best thing about the outfits you were wearing?

I loved the colours and they felt like my own as soon as I’d put them on.  I loved the shape of the skirt and the scarf was perfect with it too.

How would you describe your mum’s style?

Mum has a pretty casual style during the day which makes her look all the lovelier when she dresses up for an evening out

What do you admire about your mum?

Her sense of adventure – from learning to fly biplanes, sailing down the Nile in a Felucca or trekking to Machu Picchhu in Peru, she’s always been pretty fearless.

What do you think you inherited from your mum?

Oh my goodness, I see so much of myself in my Mum & the older I get the more I notice!

Tell us about your mum’s talents…

This question made me chuckle – the first thing that came into my head was “Mum Walks” – she is a bit renowned for getting us lost; we’ve often ended up in the middle of nowhere, up to our knees in mud, trapped by brambles, or getting chased by a herd of unruly cows!

Tell us about your fondest memory together…

We use to visit Dobwalls Theme Park when I was a kid (sadly closed now) & have lots of fun memories together there – the tire swings through the woods were our favourites.

What did you enjoy about the shoot?

It was great to take some time out with Mum, try some clothes on & have a giggle.  It lovely to have a ‘proper’ photo of us together too.

What was the best thing about the outfits you were wearing?

The Sailor Tunic wasn’t a colour id usually go for however having worn it for the shoot, will definitely be adding it to my wardrobe!

How would you describe your daughter’s style?

Sara isn’t swayed by fashion. She wears what she likes and, frankly, with her figure, would look good in a sack!

What do you admire about your daughter?

Sara has always been so sensible and grown up, even as a young child, and never caused me a moment’s concern. I’m extremely proud of her.

Do you think your daughter inherited any of your traits?

My work ethic and love of animals. Neither of us likes housework, and will do as little as possible, but give our all in the workplace.

Tell us about your daughter’s talents…

She’s confident and creative (a sculpture which won her a competition still stands by the main entrance to her secondary school).

Tell us about your fondest memory together…

As a full time working mum, any time together with Sara has been precious, like the week we spent together in Tunisia soaking up the sun shortly after she left school.

What did you enjoy about the shoot?

The relaxed atmosphere, meeting some of Sara’s lovely colleagues, and spending a couple of hours with Sara having fun.

What was the best thing about the outfits you were wearing?

Comfort. I do like to feel relaxed and comfortable, and both outfits fitted the bill perfectly. I’ve already bought one top and can’t wait to buy the other, plus scarf.
