A Day Out in Penzance

Our knitwear designer Carina, her partner Tim and mother Lynn explored Penzance as part of our ‘The Cornwall We Love’ series. Here we share a little more about the special galleries, cafes and shops they visited on their day out.  

This https://www.45queenst.com/ in the heart of Penzance is having new life breathed into it by owners Hannah and Sam. Not only is it the HQ for their Tinkture Gin, it also multitasks as a bar, dining and live events space.

The on-site kitchen is busy being put to good use by Oona and Flo and their bakery business, Thursday’s Child, whose heavenly creations are lovingly hand-baked for weddings and businesses in the local area. Almost too pretty to eat… almost!

The sister space to The Newlyn Art Gallery, The Exchange joined Cornwall’s illustrious art scene in 2007 and has been bringing some of the world’s best contemporary art to the heart of Penzance ever since. Their latest major exhibition Seaside: Photographed captures a rich visual history of life on British beaches, charting the relationship between photography and British coastal resorts from the late 1800s right up to the present day.

Tucked into a side street next to a tempting stretch of antique and secondhand shops, The Honey Pot serves delicious homemade breakfasts and lunches to eat in or takeaway. We recommend the crab or the aubergine stew! Monday is their day of rest, so bear that in mind if you’re keen to pay them a visit.

The owners of The Edge of the World Bookshop are husband and wife Rachel and James, who love to talk about books almost as much as they like to read them. They embarked on their quest to run a bookshop beside the sea almost 10 years ago when, like our founders the Chadwick family, they swapped the midlands for Penzance. 

Now happily settled and part of the fabric of local life, there’s always something new and interesting for the book-obsessed to discover in their packed shelves and lively calendar of author events.

Our first-ever shop is still tucked up round the corner opposite the train station, though it looks a little different now to when it was a general clothing store back in 1981. Just like Penzance, it has evolved over the years, but never lost its essential character: bustling, unique, immersed in art and full of discoveries just waiting to be made.
