Art in the City Event Truro

posted on April 10th, 2012 by Emma

Seasalt were watching as the Big Art project unfolded last week. Eight large blank canvasses were placed in public sites around Truro and were painted on site by local artists on the theme ‘My Truro’. Gemma and Nikki from our Truro shop have enjoyed watching the artists at work and speaking to them about their inspiration:

Tracey Hunter is a member of the Wadebridge life drawing group and often drops in to the St Ives School of Painting, which happens to be part of the inspiration behind our current Artists and Potters collection! Tracey was painting outside Truro Arts company on River Street. Her painting depicts Truro Cathedral and the river Truro amongst other buildings in a Cubist – Abstract style.

Many locals may be able to guess the inspiration behind this creation by Leonardo Santolamazza… The 15ft high bronze sculpture that stands proudly on the piazza outside the Hall for Cornwall led the Italian artist to create this bold piece.

This multi-media collage was created by Suzy Sharpe, lecturer of fine art at Cornwall College, Camborne. Her painting was inspired by the affect that shopping can have on animals and the environment. Her subtle use of shopping bags in the background of the painting adds an interesting textural element to the piece. Suzy currently has an exhibition of her work on show at the Poly in Falmouth for those of you interested viewing more of her work.

These three paintings will be brought together, along with 13 others created at the same event, to be displayed at the Lander Gallery from Tuesday 10 – Thursday 12 April. If you fancy purchasing a one-off piece of ‘BIG Art’ there will be a BigArt auction on Thursday 12 at 6pm. Seasalt love to see local artists being supported by the local community and would like to thank Totally Truro, Event Cornwall and MPAD for organising and promoting the event.

Wonderful to see businesses (such as Seasalt!) and the public throughout Truro enjoying Art in the City! I will definitely be there to see the BigArt pieces being auctioned of on Thursday evening. I would encourage anyone interested in purchasing these unique works of art to come along – you never know, you might end up with a painting in your home!
