our history
Our business started in 1981, when our father, Don Chadwick moved us all to Cornwall from Walsall, near Birmingham. He and my brother David were mooching around Penzance on a drizzly August day and went into an old Army & Navy store to buy a waterproof jacket. Within half an hour hands were shaken on the sale of the shop. Twenty eight years later, we still run the Penzance shop, and quite a few others as well (see our stores page). We love the area we live in and we are very proud to be a part of it. Dad passed away in 2001, but the business is still family run by myself, Neil, and my brothers David and Leigh. We now own eleven shops and surprisingly, most of the time we get on very well!
In 2004 Neil met his future wife Sophie, a textile designer, and a year later Seasalt started to design and source their own brand of clothing. From the very beginning we wanted to create clothing that spoke of the area and the life that we love here in Cornwall.
By 2005 we became the first fashion company to have garments certified to Soil Association standards, and we've been amazed (and grateful) at its success. Everyday we receive online orders from around the world and seem to have found a real gap in the market. However, not everything we sell is organically produced but we're trying to increase the percentage year on year (currently it's 50%). Each year, we'll be expanding the Seasalt product range to include bags, towels, waterproof jackets - and anything else you might need to enjoy yourself!
If you're visiting the South West, please come and visit us, and if you have any comments or suggestions, we'd love to hear from you.
See you in Cornwall
